Making Every (Paint) Drop Count
Aiming to build rapport and re-connect with our volunteers, the Singapore International Foundation organised an art jamming session for our Singapore International Volunteers (SIVs) and their friends on World Water Day on 22 March.
Our SIF volunteer community came together on World Water Day to celebrate Water for Life – with an art jamming experience at My Art Space (an art studio-gallery along Orchard Road).
Many of our volunteers have taken part in our Water for Life projects to work with international communities in Cambodia, Indonesia and Myanmar to get easy access to clean water. Some have even volunteered more than once.
And with this art jam, we wanted to provide a ‘canvas’ for our volunteers to literally paint their picture of a better world. We also wanted them to paint a picture of what Water for Life means to them, a challenge they readily accepted. With the help of the folks at My Art Space, our participants were encouraged to release their inner Picassos and Michelangelos.
The participants were divided into groups and asked to paint a picture according to the theme of Water for Life in celebration of World Water Day - a UN-designated day to highlight the global water crisis and celebrate the progress made to date.
One of the ways which we bring world communities together to do good is by sending our volunteers overseas to help people in neighbouring countries gain access to clean drinking water. Clean water is an important component in raising basic standards of living and creating a better world.
Through our Water for Life project, our SIVs have, over the years, helped improved the quality of life in Siem Riep and Kampong Speu in Cambodia, bringing clean water to more than 17,400 households there. Earlier this month, we launched Water for Life (Yangon).
Having experienced first-hand the importance of water to these communities, it didn’t take long for each group to come up with ideas on how to represent the theme through their art.
Although it was the first time some of the participants were painting, they enjoyed the camaraderie and the freedom of expressing their passion and vision through art.
Each and every one gamely and cheerfully put paint to canvas, a testament to the heart and soul of our SIVs.
