India-Indonesia Journalist Visit Programme 2019
From 3-6 September 2019, the SIF hosted a Journalist Visit Programme (JVP) for our media friends from India and Indonesia. Since 2000, the programme has been providing an immersive learning experience for regional opinion shapers on how Singaporeans live, work, and create.
From 3-6 September 2019, the SIF hosted a Journalist Visit Programme (JVP) for our media friends from India and Indonesia. Since 2000, the programme has been providing an immersive learning experience for regional opinion shapers on how Singaporeans live, work, and create.
The group of 10 journalists experienced the heart and soul of Singapore including visits to social enterprises from various sectors, inclusive community spaces such as Kampung Admiralty, a first-of-its kind development in Singapore which integrates housing for the elderly with a wide range of facilities, and the Enabling Village, an all-accessible public space designed to combine retail, lifestyle and training for differently-abled members of the community, as well as cultural walking tours to Little India and Kampong Glam. Special to this year’s JVP is the commemorative showcase From Singapore to Singaporean: The Bicentennial Experience where the journalists embarked on a historical journey of our city-state from as early as the 13th century to present times.
Indonesia’s Desi Purnamawati, Editor and News Coordinator, ANTARA News, shared: “Through this programme, I gained a new understanding of Singapore: how it can be an independent country despite its limited resources. This is largely because the government is very concerned about its citizens’ lives – providing the best facilities and ensuring its diverse people live together in harmony.”
While India’s Sivarajan Devarajan, Assistant Editor, DTNext, said: “The programme offered a comprehensive view of the quality of life in Singapore which ought to be emulated by every country. To me, Singapore is a global village where the way its people are cared for is highly impressive. But what makes it greater is the country’s willingness to build a better world.”
Additionally, this year’s JVP included a subject which is verily at the heart of Singapore’s rapidly-ageing society – living the final leg of our lives with dignity. The journalists visited Assisi Hospice to learn how it provides care to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. They also engaged in an in-depth sharing session with Dr Akhileswaran Ramaswamy, an active volunteer in the SIF’s palliative care training projects in Indonesia since 2009. An experience that Indonesia’s Radityo Priyasmoro, Reporter, Liputan6.com, found “most memorable and an eye-opener”. He remarked that “the services Singapore provides its people in palliative care should be in every country, especially Indonesia – to respect people’s right to the end of their life journey.”

Through the JVP, the journalists had the opportunity to network with their peers from Singapore media outlets Mothership.SG and Tamil Murasu, exchanging insights on the media landscapes of each other’s countries.
